Mathematics
- Focus: algebra, problem solving, and abstract thinking
- Progression: essential for STEM pathways
- National 4: internally assessed (no final exam)
- National 5: two exams (non-calculator and calculator)
- Higher: two exams (non-calculator and calculator)
- Advanced Higher: two exams (non-calculator and calculator)
Applications of Mathematics
- Focus: real-life mathematics, finance, statistics and data
- Progression: useful for social sciences and everyday numeracy
- National 3 & 4: internally assessed (no final exam)
- National 5: two exams (non-calculator and calculator)
- Higher: exam plus assignment
Choosing the Right Course
- Mathematics is recommended for pupils considering careers in science, engineering or technology
- Applications of Mathematics is suitable for pupils interested in practical mathematics and real-life contexts
- Both courses develop valuable numeracy and problem-solving skills
